Day six was another drive day so this will be short and sweet!
We hopped on the bus in the morning and I zipped myself in my sleeping bag on my seat to take a nap. I was dozing for a while when I woke up to an “OH SHIT!” and “Stop the truck!”
I popped out of my sleeping bag and Jane was reaching out the space where the front right window used to be and looking pretty distressed… To be fair, Mara’s front right window had been sticky for the entire trip and REALLY hard to close. Jane and Amberlee had gone to close it up since the sand has been crazy in Namibia during our drives… and the accidentally popped it out of the track and it flew off into the highway.
Whoops.
Maja and Masai stopped the truck and we casually reversed down the road, only to find the window smashed into pieces. We boarded Mara up with a green tarp and some duct tape and said “eh! It’s Africa!” and went on our way.
We passed by the Tropic of Capricorn and stopped for a viewing point and a pretty sweet photo as we crossed the bottom fourth of the world, and then we cruised along til about 15 minutes outside of Swakopmund, when we stopped at a flamingo watering hole where we were lucky enough to see three flamingoes in their natural habitat. We snapped a couple of pictures there as well, and then headed into town!
Once we were in town, we went to the activity booking office to plan the next couple of days. It was too windy to skydive that day so we all booked it (yes ALL, including Maja!) for the next day, and some people adding in quad biking and/or sandboarding as well. We went over to the hostel to check in, and the quad bikers went off to enjoy their activity while the rest of us putzed around town. (I was one of the non-bikers, and we went on a 3 hour lunch adventure to the SWANKIEST lunch place with some effing delicious food. Worth it for sure.) Once everyone was back together, we all showered and got ready to go out – we played some cards and had a few drinks, and then went off to Napolitana, basically the ONLY nightlife in Swakopmund. We had an excellent night and turned in pretty late but early enough that we would all be ready for our activities the next day.
